EdTech LMS MVP From Concept to 500 Students in 6 Weeks
Independent training provider · BTEC & professional courses
The challenge
The provider was delivering all course materials via PDF email attachments and managing assessments through paper submissions. When COVID hit, they needed to move online — fast — without the budget for an enterprise LMS.
Our solution
We built a custom LMS MVP in 6 weeks: course content delivery, video hosting, online assessments, tutor feedback tools, and a student progress dashboard. Built on Next.js and Supabase for rapid development and zero-infrastructure overhead.
The Problem
The training provider had a loyal student base and strong course content — but zero digital infrastructure. When in-person delivery became impossible, they had two weeks to figure out how to teach online. Their first attempt — Zoom calls with PDF attachments — was unmanageable at scale.
Our Approach
We scoped the MVP in a single day: what are the non-negotiables for a student to complete a course online? Course content delivery, video lessons, assignments, tutor feedback, and a progress tracker. Everything else was out of scope for v1.
We chose Next.js + Supabase for the speed: Supabase gave us authentication, a PostgreSQL database, and file storage out of the box. Vercel meant zero deployment overhead. Within 6 weeks, we had a working platform that tutors could upload courses to and students could enrol in online.
The Outcome
The platform launched on a Monday; by Friday, 50 students had enrolled. Eight weeks later, 500 active students were using it daily. The course completion rate improved significantly — the provider attributed this to the progress dashboard making students more aware of where they were in their learning journey.
Six months later, the provider had expanded from 3 to 12 active courses on the platform and was generating revenue online that more than covered the initial build cost.
